Lydia Des Dolles -  Vox & Synth player with Dublin band "SweetJane", and one half of female-duo DJ’s "The Cherrybombs" ponders her five favourite albums

‘’Just got round to compiling my top 5 albums, it's kind of one of those things that you’re asked to do and you say ‘yeah sure that’s an easy one’ but in reality it's kinda hard.  Fortunately when I’m DJ'n with The Cherrybombs (www.myspace.com/thecherrybombs), I can play just about anything in my collection but throwing just five down, it’s a bit hard, but here goes….’’

BLACK SABBATH – PARANOID – This was one of the first Black Sabbath albums that I ever heard, and unfortunately at that time I wasn’t old enough to understand the power of Black Sabbath and what an awe-inspiring album Paranoid is. I loved that element that they portrayed ‘’we’re just these guys playing this music that we want to hear’’, but in fact they were actually setting the standard for hundreds of bands to follow. Unfortunately not a lot of bands came close to anything Sabbath conquered.

HOLE – LIVE THROUGH THIS – I think Hole was the first band that my Mom said ‘’no way, you’re not listening to that’’ which is understandable when you’re ten and Courtney Love is screaming 'bout drugs, rape and death. But I could never deny the fact that Hole as a band are totally to blame for me being so caught up in music, and wanting to play music. This album is their first, and it’s never lost its freshness, I can always listen to it, it never gets old. It’s that perfect blend of girly lyrics, and boy guitars, still holding on to its raw edge but managing to be completely melodic. Every girl should own a copy of this album.

THE BLACK ANGELS – PASSOVER – I first heard of the Black Angels when Dublin band THE THINGS supported them a while back, and I totally loved this band t-shirt they had out, which had their name over Nico’s (The Velvet Underground) face, and I hadn’t been able to get a copy of the album anywhere. Then thankfully the upside to working in a record store paid off, and we got it in. I was totally blown away by the album, it’s everything you could want your band to sound like, and everything you would want a band to be like, and I was even more excited to learn that they had this girl playing drone machine. I have this slight obsession with drone machines. Alex Maas has such a unique voice and they’re just really heavy, but still manage to hold on to that psychedelic vibe. I give them one year before they come out of the underground and are listed as the next big thing.

BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE – TAKE IT FROM THE MAN – The Brian Jonestown Massacre are safely one of my most cherished bands, and one of the very few bands left that can make me go weak at the knees seeing them live, as a band they’ve got this car crash type quality, that’s like one of the most beautiful things to watch. Anton Newcombe obviously being the reason why they are as amazing as they are, the way he can just throw out an album, and it be the most spectacular piece of music you’ve ever heard, is just sick to me. He’s a genius, and I don’t use that term very lightly. 'Take it from the man' is definitely my favourite album, it’s just got so many good vibes to it, and it’s got all these amazing and weird instruments that were used in the recording, i'ts pretty mind blowing.

MAINLINE – WHERE THE GHOSTS MEET – How could I do a top five anything, without mentioning MAINLINE, they are safely one of the best bands to come out of Dublin, no, rephrase that, Ireland, naw fuck that the world he he. Umm, no on a serious note, this is the latest offering from Mainline, their first EP.  They’re another band that make me just go weak when I see them live, they’re just this fucking power house when it comes to playing, and I dare anyone to not be completely in love with them after they play.

They’ve just come off tour with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and without a shadow of a doubt blew them off their own tour. It’s one record that I listen to every single day. With their three guitars, they just put together these amazing riffs, but even though there is 6 of them in the band, listening to them, I don’t know how to say it with enough justice, they’re all individually busting out these amazing guitar riffs, bass lines, and drum beats.  But they just blend all together so well, and then Neil’s vocals are just like the fucking cherry on top of the most amazing cake you’ve ever tasted, it’s just fucking shocking to think that no-one has been smart enough to give them the best record deal ever put out. Just makes you think if the EP is like this, what’s the album gunna be like?

So there’s my top 5, I feel like I wanna give you about another 30,000 pages, now that I’m reading over it I’m like, what about The La's, The Sonics,13th Floor Elevators, Vive la Fete, BRMC, Black Label Society, Spiritualized, The Cobbs, Morning After Girls, The Stones, The Gun Club and of course SWEET JANE... (www.myspace.com/officialsweetjane)...y'see where I’m going with this???
